About Gordon Parks elementary

At Gordon Parks Elementary School, nestled in the heart of Kansas City, Missouri, we are more than just a public charter school. We are a vibrant community of learners, educators, and dreamers who celebrate the infinite potential of every child. Our commitment to education began in 1999 when founders Dorothy Curry and Sue Jarvis ignited the spark that has now grown into a beacon of hope for young minds in kindergarten through fourth grade. The school's namesake, the pioneering African-American artist and intellectual, Gordon Parks, is more than an inspiration - he is a symbol of the heights our students can reach.

Armed with passion and dedication, our faculty and administrative team is steadfast in fostering an environment that sets the bar high for our students in achievement, attendance, and behavior. Our unique approach, involving a dual-teacher model in each kindergarten classroom, allows us to cater to our students' distinct educational needs and bridge academic achievement gaps. This exemplary low student-teacher ratio offers us the vantage point to keep a close eye on each student's progress and provide personalized educational guidance.

As a charter school, we are fueled by public funds, yet our vitality comes from the unwavering support and generosity of community partners and volunteers. These dedicated allies join us in providing small class sizes, an enhanced curriculum, and comprehensive support services that equip our students with the necessary tools to excel.

Gordon Parks Elementary School thrives on accountability, answering to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Schools (DESE), and the U.S. Department of Education. As a registered 501(c)3 organization, we are governed by a board of directors who uphold the integrity of our mission and ensure that every child has the opportunity to shine.
