  • We want our students to choose to read, to choose what they read and to become life-long learners.
  • We want our students and staff to become effective users of information and technology.
  • We want our parents to read every day with their children. You read to them, and they read to you. Even short books can be read and reread over several days. Each time you read the book, you will find something new to talk about.
  • Students can earn a special library certificate at the end of the year if they return their books on time!

September, October, November activities

K - Kindergarteners have been learning library rules and procedures. They are also learning how to take care of books. They are making a book care booklet which they will bring home to share with you as soon as it is finished. I will have you sign a permission slip to check out library books when you come for conferences in November. There are many options for you to choose from (paperback/hardbound - 1/2 books - take home/leave at school). Please choose wisely as books are very expensive.

1 - First graders have been reviewing library rules and procedures. They have also learned how to check out library books using markers. We are now working on Caldecott Medal books (best picture book of the year). We will read many of them and do an online graph of the ones we like best. The Three Pigs (a very unusual version), Officer Buckle and Gloria, The Snowy Day, The Hello-Goodbye Window and Song and Dance Man are always favorites.

2 - Second graders are finishing up a unit from last year called illustration styles. They are now learning about cameras because most true fact books are illustrated with photographs instead of watercolor or collage. They will take pictures of each other to finish up their booklet. We will then learn more about dictionaries.

3 - Third graders are finishing up their folktale unit from last year. We have already studied tales from around the world and are now concentrating on tales from North America.

4 - Fourth graders have reviewed how to use our online catalog. They know that they can also access the Kansas City Public Library catalog by going to the library website and clicking on search. We are now learning how to use the pronunciation key in our dictionaries. After that, we will be learning how to use our database.

5 - Fifth graders have been working on change over time. They are beginning to understand that, in the past, most change happened very gradually. In the present day, change comes much more quickly. We are now beginning to study historical change through fiction and video clips. All 5th graders are expected to read historical fiction books this year: 1st trimester - one book, 2nd trimester - two books, 3rd trimester - three books.

Food for Thought

Where a student is not so important is where that student is headed.
