The Gordon Parks Way begins each day when the students are greeted by all staff members and gather together as a community to recite the Pledge of Allegiance; immediately following, the children continue with the STAR pledge:
I am Safe.
I am a Team Player.
I show Respect.
I show Service.
I am and always will be a STAR!
Students then enter a day of instruction, activities and opportunities designed under the guidance of the Responsive Classroom approach, delivered by two full-time teachers in each classroom and supported by our CARE Team.
Responsive Classroom is an evidence-based approach of teaching that leads to greater teacher effectiveness, higher student achievement and improved school climate. This set of practices help educators develop competencies in these four areas: engaging academics, effective management, positive community and developmental responsive teaching.
The Gordon Parks Way also includes a collaborative teaching model with three teachers in each grade level which makes our teacher to student ratio 1:12. This approach allows our teachers the ability to respond to students' academic and social-emotional needs through a balance of individual, small group and whole class instruction.
Working hand-in-hand with the Responsive Classroom approach, our CARE Team strives to build resiliency in students using a trauma-informed model that promotes student, staff and families healing and growing together.
Gordon Parks Elementary School is on the cutting edge as we apply this approach school-wide.
