Letter to Parents

Dear Gordon Parks Families,

Welcome back to an exciting 2011 – 2012 school year at Gordon Parks Elementary School! The staff is thrilled that you have entrusted your children’s education to us. We will make every effort to help your child achieve academically and socially this year. It is our goal to create an enriched learning environment that engages each student. Of course, as the first teacher in your child’s life, we need and welcome your support and cooperation. Gordon Parks has an excellent teaching staff with a wealth of knowledge. We also have an outstanding support staff who works in different capacities to support your child’s learning.

You will continue to receive weekly information through the Thursday Parent Packet. Please check your child’s backpack every Thursday for important school information. Feel free to write back with questions, suggestions, or concerns.

One major change for this year is that school is dismissed at 2:30p on Wednesdays so that staff may participate in professional development. This weekly training will allow our staff time to work and learn together in order to provide the best education for your child.

We encourage you to become active in our Parent Advisory Committee (PAC). On our calendar you will note that this group meets on the second Tuesday of each month. The PAC is a wonderful way for you to share ideas and support the mission of the school. Another way to get involved is to volunteer to help tutor students, chaperone field trips, or organize classroom celebrations. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact our Volunteer and Development Coordinator, Shannon Solis.

Wadandra McBride is our Family Outreach Coordinator and can assist you with connecting you to a variety of community resources, if needed. Mrs. McBride will be leading the PAC again and has some exciting topics planned for this year.

Finally, if your child needs additional support or if you have a concern, please do not hesitate to contact his/her teacher. It is our mission to support your child in whatever way we can. Gordon Parks Elementary is fortunate to have the resources that support students and their families. Working together makes a difference in the lives of our students.
